Board of management

The VSA is governed by a Board of Management comprising a team from business, health services, vocational training and education, and higher education. The purpose of the Board is to develop, implement and direct the key strategic operations of the VSA.

Debra KiegaldiePresident

Debra is a founding member of the VSA and is the current president. She has worked in the field of simulation for over 20 years.

Her areas of interest include curriculum integration of simulation methodology, simulation evaluation and research, simulated patients/clients and interprofessional learning.

Karen Livesay
Karen LivesayVice President

Karen has worked in nursing simulation leading its implementation at VU. More recently she has branched out to work with other discipline groups including midwifery and paramedicine.

Karen has also led simulation in a large interprofessional education program. Simulated Patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have been the focus of Karen’s research, work activity and PhD.

Nina Klein
Nina KleinExecutive officer

Nina has been involved with the VSA since its inception as the Executive Officer. She plays a significant role in the operations of the VSA managing a range of events and Initiatives and is the main point of contact for all VSA matters.

Nina has worked in the field of education and training for over 16 years, with a background in ICU Nursing, organ/tissue donation and transplantation. Her simulation interests include program development, role-play and simulated participants.

Janet Beer

I believe simulation education and training in a fantastic vehicle to teach in health care across many applications, and I am particularly interested in the non-technical skills such good communication, teamwork and leadership.

I am instructor on the NHET-Sim program and have found this to be a great opportunity to help others who want to understand more about simulation and how to apply it to their teaching practice.

Julie	Cartwright
Julie CartwrightBoard member

Julie Cartwright has a strong business and clinical background with a focus on quality and safety. As a UK trained RN1 Critical Care nurse who came to Australia in 1987, Julie went on to complete her Ba Business (Accounting) at Monash University in 1991, followed by her CPA and MBA at Deakin University.

Julie is a surveyor for the ACHS and Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL). Currently working as a Business Manager at a large independent medical practice, Julie also undertakes some private nurse consulting in chronic disease.

Julie has no actual skills in the simulation environment but hopes to add a different dimension to the board's considerable knowledge base.

Brendan Condon

I am keen to represent rural Victoria in the simulation world and utilise simulation training within medical student education and for inter-professional communication training, with intern and nursing staff, at South West Healthcare.

I am a clinical senior lecturer in the Greater Green Triangle Rural Clinical School, within the Deakin University School of Medicine, with a background in rural general practice.

I am the Deputy Chair, Education Sub-committee, Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria.

Joanne Donovan
Joanne DonovanBoard member

Joanne has been working in the field of education, training and simulation for 15 years. She has a background in ICU, acute care nursing and has 20 years experience in senior nursing leadership roles in public hospitals both in United Kingdom and Australia.

Her interests are interprofessional development of teams using simulation, translational simulation to enhance staff efficiency and patient outcomes and integration of simulation methodology into program design.

I currently work in the clinical training of Undergraduate and graduate students from all health disciplines while they attend clinical placements at Epworth HealthCare.

I deliver simulation-based training for existing hospital staff as part of their CPD requirements, and I'm involved in the development and delivery of simulation-based courses for external education providers.

My current simulation focus is with simulated patients. At HEAL we have a Simulated Patient (SP) Program whereby we train SPs. SPs who pass an assessment are entered on to the HEAL database and hired to organisations for educational encounters.

I have in excess of 20 years experience in senior management roles, largely in medical administration and medical education. The latter, utilising simulation in all forms.

Tess	Vawser

Tess has an extensive background in the establishment and management of hi fidelity simulation centres, the coordination and training of facilitators and program development.

She is currently the Director of Clinical Education and Simulation for Epworth HealthCare expanding all aspects of interdisciplinary Clinical education across the organisation campuses.

She has been involved in the design and implementation of national and state simulation based training programs. Tess comes from Critical Care Nursing Background in Peri operative and Emergency Nursing.
