VSA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES: Principals of feedback and debriefing

Shared communication between health and community service workers and their clients has now become a critical component of professional, person-centred practice.

Over the past five years there has been a drive to enhance the experiential dimensions of communication skills learning and assessment by using role-play and simulation-based education (SBE) in health education and national training packages. A feature of SBE is the opportunity for learners to practice diverse interpersonal skills. Not only does this require careful planning, expert scenario design and script development by the course designer, but the ability to be able to provide feedback to learners. Feedback and debriefing are essential elements to help learners understand and learn from SBE.

This workshop will outline the key features of delivering quality feedback and debriefing sessions and provide you with an opportunity to practise these skills using defined frameworks. Using small group methods such as practical hands-on activities, participants will:

  • Identify the use of feedback and debriefing as it applies to the learning and teaching process
  • Understand the theory that underpins feedback and debriefing
  • Identify current debriefing models and their application
  • Practice debriefing and feedback methods
  • Recognise and demonstrate the basic principles of a safe debrief
